System of Orchestration
What Is a System of Orchestration?
A system of orchestration is the layer of software that coordinates procurement activity, requests, approvals, sourcing, purchase orders and invoicing, across an organization's existing systems, most importantly its ERP. It does not store the official financial or master data itself. Instead, it manages how information and decisions move between the people, policies and systems already in place.
This is different from a system of record, which is the platform responsible for storing and controlling the authoritative version of data, such as an ERP's financial ledgers or supplier master records. Enterprises that grow across multiple entities, locations or ERP instances typically need both: a system of record to keep data accurate and compliant, and a system of orchestration to keep the surrounding process connected and fast.
