Maverick Spend
What Is Maverick Spend?
Maverick spend, also called off-contract or rogue spend, is purchasing that bypasses an organization's procurement policy, approved suppliers or negotiated contracts. It typically happens when employees buy directly from unapproved suppliers, skip required approvals, or pay outside agreed contract terms.
In an enterprise environment, maverick spend tends to grow when requests start in email or spreadsheets, approval paths are unclear, or contracts and catalogs are hard to find. It is difficult to see because the spend often sits outside the purchase order process, and the ERP only records it after the money has already been committed.
How Maverick Spend Is Controlled
How SAFAL Supports Maverick Spend Control
SAFAL's spend analysis capability consolidates purchase order, invoice and contract data to show where spend is falling outside approved suppliers and agreed terms, integrated natively with SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics and Navision. Combined with structured intake and automated approval routing, it helps procurement teams steer purchases toward contracts and catalogs before spend is committed. This is particularly valuable for multi-entity, multi-location and multi-plant enterprises, such as those in EPC, oil and gas, chemicals and manufacturing, where purchasing is spread across many requesters and sites.
